The book features more than of John DePol's best engravings from five decades with an extensive text examining his place in American graphic art.

He worked with most letterpress printers and private presses of the latter half of the 20th century. John DePol (–) was one of America’s most prolific book illustrators who worked in the relief-printing technique known as wood engraving.

His dramatic images often feature bold, dominant black backgrounds from which the image appears in white. This undated self-portrait is representative of DePol’s work in the latter years of his life. John DePol was art director and sole illustrator of the entire Franklin keepsake series. The first fourteen of these (pre) were printed letterpress; the remainder of the books were printed offset.
